Curt and Shonda Schilling are shining stars in the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. For more than a decade, the Schillings have devoted themselves to the battle against this progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord.
The 2008 season of Curt’s Pitch for ALS has been thrown a curve. Due to his shoulder injury, Curt Schilling will be unable to pitch for the better part of the first half of the season. This will not prevent the 2008 season from being a success! Curt and Shonda have decided that this year, each chapter of The ALS Association that employs the Curt’s Pitch program will benefit based on the performance of pitchers local to each respective chapter.
Arizona Chapter – Brandon Webb
Philadelphia Chapter – Cole Hamels
New England Chapters – Josh Beckett
Japanese Chapter – Daisuke Matsuzaka

The Schillings first met Dick Bergeron, a person with ALS, in 1992 when Curt was pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies. The meeting had a tremendous impact on them as they saw a courageous person facing a devastating illness. They developed Curt's Pitch for ALS in 1993, and designed the program with hopes that it would improve the quality of life for those living with the disease and their families.
When Curt was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Schillings started Curt's Pitch with the Arizona Chapter, expanding the program to include support for both the Pennsylvania and Arizona chapters of The ALS Association.
Beginning with the 2004 season, Curt began wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform, and he and Shonda are as active as ever for The Association, from serving as national spokespersons to attending The Association’s National Advocacy Day to donating their time for an award-winning public service announcement for the 2004 ALS Awareness Month program.
Their commitment is so strong that they are continuing Curt's Pitch for ALS in Philadelphia, Arizona and Massachusetts, as well as chapters in Northern New England, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
