Modifying Nutritional Therapy in ALS Patients with Changes in Respiratory Status

Ellis, Amy Cameron, MPH, RD, LDN
Rosenfeld, Jeffrey, Ph.D., M.D.
Carolinas Neuromuscular / ALS Center

Hypothesis:
For patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), maintaining good nutrition is very important.  Weight loss and malnutrition are associated with shortened survival, while nutritional repletion has been shown to prevent weight loss and improve survival.

Aim:
To determine if the caloric requirements in ALS patients are different at the various stages of respiratory compromise leading to ventilator dependence.

Status:
To date, 11 patients have committed to participate in this study.  Study visits and interim monitoring by phone and email have revealed good compliance and tolerance to the protocol.
