A Comparison of early versus conventional initiation of non-invasive positive ventilation pressure ventilation (NPPV) in ALS

Carlayne Jackson, MD

University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio

Hypothesis:
The early detection of respiratory dysfunction intervention with NIV will improve QOL and prolong survival.

Aim:
Compare survival, QOL and success with NIV among patients who began NIV when initial nocturnal desaturation was documented (Group 1) and those who began NIV when FVC declined below 50% or when hypoventilation symptoms appear (Group #2)

Status:
The study is completed. More research is needed in this area. Presentations have been made and manuscripts published.
