ALSA Honors ALS Clinician/Researcher with Mulder Award

The ALS Association (ALSA) presented Raymond P. Roos, M.D., with the prestigious Mulder Award, which recognizes individuals for their work in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease.  A distinguished ALS investigator with multiple grants from ALSA and the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Roos is a professor and former chair of the Department of Neurology at The University of Chicago.

The award was presented by Robert Abendroth, national trustee and chair of the research committee, during the November 2004 meeting of ALSA’s National Board of Trustees in Chicago.  “A compassionate clinician, Dr. Roos exemplifies the leadership, dedication and achievement in combating ALS and service to ALSA for which the Donald W. Mulder Award is given, said Abendroth.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Roos as an important contributor to our research program,” added Lucie Bruijn, ALSA’s science director and vice president.

Dr. Roos has served as a member and chair of ALSA’s Scientific Review Committee and was selected to participate in an ALSA-initiated research project.  In these projects, ALSA’s Scientific Advisory Committee identifies established investigators to seek answers to key questions that must be addressed in order to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for ALS.

“It has been a privilege of mine to take care of ALS patients and to try to increase our understanding and find a treatment of this disease,” said Roos in his acceptance speech.

The Mulder Award was named for Donald W. Mulder, M.D., Emeritus Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Medical School in Minnesota, who was on the front line in the battle against ALS for more than three decades.
