Providing Veterans with ALS the Care They Deserve

Bill Holmes has dedicated nearly every day of his adult life to public service. He proudly enlisted in the Army immediately after high school serving three years before returning home to spend the next 33 years protecting the people of Toledo, Ohio as a police officer.

A dedicated family man with twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren, ALS had no part in Bill’s retirement plans. For the man who describes himself as a glass half full kind of a guy, his 2013 diagnosis has in no way deterred his upbeat attitude.

His primary concern was simply to find the best access to care, which led him to the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which is presently the only VA hospital in the nation to also hold the prestigious designation of also being an ALS Certified Center. Veterans like Bill have the comfort of knowing their hospital has achieved The ALS Association’s rigorous clinical care and treatment standards, which are based on the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Practice Parameters. This certification also requires participation in ALS-related research and successful completion a comprehensive site review.

Your commitment to our cause means veterans like Bill are getting the care and help they so desperately need today to navigate the hardships of this disease that disproportionately affects veterans more than other segment of our population.

You Make Hope and Progress Possible for our Heroes in Uniform

When the VA first started getting patients with ALS, we didn’t have a formalized ALS program, and it was The ALS Association’s guidelines for Certified Centers that helped us build our program and helped us meet the goals of a certified center so that we could provide the same care within the VA that could be provided outside the VA, explained Frances McClellan, RN, MSN, CNS, ALS Coordinator.

Thanks to you, Bill couldn’t be happier with the care he’s now receiving.

"Everything we need seems to evolve though Fran and the clinic there, and anything we want within reason, of course, has been given, said Bill. I just can’t see any reason to be anywhere but there. I mean we’re totally delighted with the people."
