ALS Researchers Honored by Institute of Medicine
The ALS Association congratulates Don Cleveland, Ph.D., and Tom Maniatis, Ph.D., on their recent election to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Election to the IOM is in recognition of outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service and is one of the highest honors in the fields of medical science.
Dr. Cleveland is Professor of Medicine, Neurosciences, and Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in La Jolla, California, and is Chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. He has long been a prolific investigator in basic and pre-clinical ALS research and has trained numerous scientists who have gone on to careers in the field of ALS as well. Dr. Cleveland has also been a key scientific advisor and reviewer for The ALS Association.
Dr. Maniatis is the Isidore S. Edelman Professor of Biochemistry and Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He chairs The ALS Association Scientific Advisory Board and has made major contributions to understanding the molecular basis of proteins central to the ALS disease process.
“The recognition of these two scientists by the Institute of Medicine highlights the importance of their research in neurodegenerative disease in general, and ALS in particular. We are grateful that these distinguished researchers have chosen this field as the focus of their efforts,” said ALS Association Chief Scientist, Lucie Bruijn, Ph.D.
