My Grandaughter Is So Positive

Judy A. Mt Pleasant, Utah

My grandaughter is 19 years old and was diagnosed with ALS a month ago. We noticed about 4 years ago that she was walking funny. Also her speech was garbled. We took her to many doctors over the past 4 years but to no avail. We finally were able transfer her to University of Utah, and after many tests, they gave us the diagnosis. She is only 19 years old. She is a real trooper though, and she is the one that keeps us positive. She is living her life to the fullest. She has a wonderful boyfriend and also a very supportive family and community. They had an ice bucket challenge, and around 600 people came and supported the cause. I think before long she will be in a wheelchair. She has a lot of pain in her legs and has a hard time walking. It's starting to affect her swallowing, and sometimes she slobbers when she talks. Still she is so positive. If anyone can beat this disease, she can.
