Walter McFadden

Branch: Navy
Served: 1943 - 1946
Hometown: Hendersonville, NC
Written by: Judith Bailey , niece
My uncle, Walter McFadden, was in the Navy during WWII, enlisting in January 1943, just 4 days after he turned 18 and without waiting to go to his graduation ceremony. He served aboard the destroyer, USS Charles Hughes, which performed convoy duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific and arrived in Tokyo Bay in September 1945 with the first occupying troops. As a small child, I spent many hours with Uncle Walt and came to love him deeply for his wisdom, his sense of humor, and especially his big heart. He died of ALS in 2005. Because of him, I am devoted to the cause of fighting ALS.
