Vernon E Hayes

Branch: Air Force
Served: 1962 - 1992
Hometown: Summerville, SC
Written by: Sandra Smith , Daughter
My father CMSGT Vernon E Hayes served in the US Army for 6 years, and then the United States Air Force for 24 years. The military was my father's life. I feel he was born for the military. He served in Vietnam, and Desert Storm. He was the Chief over the Field Maintenance Squadron on Charleston Air Force Base when Hurricane Hugo hit. Once he knew the worst was over, and my mother and me were alright, he headed out at 4am to make sure his men were ok. His men respected him, and cared for him, as he cared for them. Family, Country, Service, he was a true hero who I miss greatly daily.
