Stuart Obermann

Stuart Obermann’s affiliation with The ALS Association since 2004 gives him unique insight into his new role as chair of the organization’s Board of Representatives.

As father and one of the two primary caregivers to his 28-year-old son Eric who had lived with Lou Gehrig’s Disease for eight years, Obermann’s experiences with ALS have impelled him to organize and expand the chapter from a being a freestanding support group for people and their families living with the disease to being a chapter that serves the entire state of Alabama and employs four full-time staff members. The chapter operates eight regional support groups, a multidisciplinary ALS clinic in Huntsville, and serves nearly 150 families who are fighting ALS.

Obermann’s volunteer work with the chapter includes his stints as acting executive director, development director, walk chair, support group facilitator, and public policy chairperson. He has also worked closely with The Association’s national advocacy program since 2004. During the following year, he and Eric testified at a U.S. Senate Sub-Committee Hearing on ALS, which Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama chaired. Obermann played a prominent role in instigating and coordinating this hearing, which occurred on Capitol Hill.

In 2005, The Association honored Obermann along his wife Marcia and Eric with its “Rasmussen Advocates of the Year” award for their advocacy efforts. The family continued their public awareness efforts through appearing in a nationally distributed public service announcement for The Association in 2006. More than 200 million people across America have seen this PSA that garnered a TELLY Award for production excellence.

Following his appearance in the PSA, Obermann served as the chapter trustee representing The Association’s southern region of chapters in 2008, and in his capacity as a national trustee, he has served on multiple committees including advocacy, community services, governance, patient services, and strategic planning.

Obermann lives in Huntsville with his family and works at dealnews.com as the executive vice president of sales. Dealnews.com is a leading website that publishes deals where consumers can find discounted pricing for a wide variety of merchandise.
