Luis E. Leon has engineered corporate restructurings and lead merger and acquisition transactions, however, it is the unfinished business of finding a cure for ALS as a member of The ALS Association National Board of Trustees that that would be the most important transaction of his life.

“I have received a lot in life and it is time to give back,” said Leon, whose mother and four of her sisters battled the disease.

Leon, a retired financial executive skilled at providing insightful counseling in  administrative, managerial and organizational issues, has been quite active in advising the board on how to invest and allocate its funds as well as working on the new strategic plan of the organization.

“It is good to be on the forefront and see how and where progress is being made, and try to help progress be made,” said Leon, who previously worked in the leisure industry.

As a member of the board, Leon also applies his organizational, corporate, governance and financial knowledge in making sure The Association remains in good standing and a world class charity, which will attract good leadership to The Association in the future.

Leon joined Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd., in Miami in 2003 as executive vice president and chief financial officer and retired in 2006. Prior to joining Royal Caribbean, Ltd., he spent 12 years as the chief financial officer in the paper and packaging, metals and mining and the aerospace industries.

From 2003 to 2006, he also was the director for the Foundation Board of Miami Dade College. Miami Dade College is the largest college in the United States with enrollment of more than 160,000 students.

In 2004, Leon was voted as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States by Hispanic Business Magazine. He earned a BSBA in finance from the University of Denver and an MBA from Oklahoma City University.

Leon was born in Chile and lives in Estero, Fla., with his wife Constance Leon.
