When Lawrence R. Barnett, Esq. joined The Association’s Board of Trustees in 2009, he perpetuated a family tradition. Barnett’s father, also named Lawrence R. Barnett, was a guiding force behind the founding of The ALS Association, serving as its first chairman in 1985 and playing an active role in the organization’s funding and development. The elder Barnett now serves as chairman emeritus.

“I am proud to continue my family’s legacy of support,” says the younger Barnett, an independent Trustee.  “I want to do what I can to help find a cure, to put an end to the terrible suffering caused by this disease,” Barnett explains.

Born in New York City and currently residing in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Barnett is managing partner at the Los Angeles law firm Gipson Hoffman & Pancione, where he has practiced as a corporate and business attorney since 1985.

Recently, the Barnett family made a substantial contribution to the fight against ALS, donating $1 million to become one of the first two members of the Laureate Society, which provides entrepreneurial supporters of The Association with a “place at the table” in guiding the organization’s direction and establishing strategic priorities. The Barnett family’s donation included a leverage grant – the promise of an additional $1 million when the Laureate Society gains at least three new members. Barnett serves as the Laureate Society’s inaugural chairman.

After receiving his B.A. from Stanford University, Barnett earned both a J.D. and M.B.A. from the University of Southern California. He considers his family to be his greatest personal accomplishment – Barnett and his wife Katherine (“Karrie”) Barnett have four children.
