ALS Association Position: Secretary of the Board of Representatives

August 24, 2005. This was the day my mother, Karen Bluemle, lost her battle with ALS. A vibrant, loving wife and mother of 3 children gone way too soon at the age of 53. A woman who loved to spend time with her family and friends, ski and golf ‐ robbed of her ability to walk, talk, and ultimately take another breath due to rapid and horrific progression of ALS.

In the years following her passing I searched for ways to not only honor her memory, but to help those currently battling this devastating disease. My first foray was the creation of Golf Fore ALS, an annual golf outing held each June at Olde Stonewall Golf Club, benefiting the ALS Association Western PA Chapter. Ultimately, this event lead to me joining the Board of Directors in 2011 – and currently serving as its Vice Chairman. In addition, I helped guide the way to establishing our chapter’s new signature event – Ski to Defeat ALS, held each February at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. These events serve as an opportunity to remember some of my mother’s favorite pastimes, as well as raise much needed awareness and funds for the patients and families we serve throughout Western Pennsylvania.

In addition to working with my local chapter, I have served as our chapter’s BOR voting representative the past 3 years, plus serving on the Development Committee – the last two years acting as Vice Chair.

It has been an honor and a pleasure to represent my chapter on the Board of Representatives these past few years, and I believe the relationships I have established throughout ALSA will help enable me to become a productive member of the BOR Executive Committee – serving in the capacity as Secretary.

I received my BA in Accounting from Washington & Jefferson College in 2003. Upon graduation I accepted a position as an auditor with the largest regional accounting firm in Pittsburgh, PA. I left this firm in 2005 joining a newly founded startup in the real estate / telecommunications industry as the first employee. In 2014, our company was acquired by Crown Castle, the largest wireless infrastructure provider in the US. Currently I work in the Corporate Development & Strategy group at Crown Castle focusing on mergers & acquisitions, as well evaluating emerging wireless technologies and ensuring our infrastructure is properly positioned to accommodate these technological advancements.

My wife Alison and I have 3 children – Caleb (6), Paige (4) and Grayson (18 months), and reside in Pittsburgh, PA.
