The ALS Association

I Am Thankful

Mickey (Shy Tuna) J. Dallas, Georgia

My name is Mickey Johnston. I have ALS. I am thankful. The bible teaches us to be thankful in all circumstances.(1Thess 5:17) ALS is a circumstance. I am thankful. I don't consider myself "battling" ALS but just living with it. I was diagnosed in February of 2011. My symptoms started three to four years prior to that. Bulbar ALS. My voice is bad and slow. My upper body is weak. My hands don't work right. I am thankful. I am a Air Force Veteran who ended up in the construction industry. We closed our business and retired two-and-a-half years ago. My wife of 33 years, Debbie, is my caregiver. I am thankful. Our daughters are grown, and we have an awesome granddaughter who is 11. I spend some of my time visiting pALS, who are less mobile than me, as someone who "gets" what they and their families are dealing with. I spread "Tie-Dye Love" to my ALS Brethren when ever I can. I love my Savior, Jesus Christ, and pray for all pALS, vALS and cALs every morning. I love all of you. I am thankful.
